A PLACE, A STORY / Zhangjiajie
Tianmen Mountain
A great natural opening interrupts Tianmen’s mountain face. The arch and surrounding cliffs offer a different Zhangjiajie landscape from Wulingyuan’s stone pillars.

Tianmen Mountain is a separate scenic place in Zhangjiajie from Wulingyuan. Its most recognizable feature is Tianmen Cave, a large natural opening through the mountain. The surrounding cliffs make the empty space of the opening as striking as the rock that contains it.
In a photograph, notice how the shape frames the sky beyond. Rather than looking only at the mountain’s height, compare the hard edges of the opening with the softer slopes around it.
