The Western Xia imperial cemetery lies at the foot of the Helan Mountains near Yinchuan. Its mausoleums and associated tombs date from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries, when the Tangut-founded dynasty developed through contact with the Silk Roads. Their surviving forms preserve a distinctive chapter of regional history.

Look at the relationship between an earthen mound and the mountains beyond it. A friend might read the scene through its scale, while you notice its textures.
