Dongguan Mosque’s history in Xining reaches back to the Ming period, according to the local historical records described by Qinghai’s government. Destruction and rebuilding have repeatedly changed the complex, so photographs from different years can show different architecture. Rather than treating one view as timeless, look at the date and the details it records. With a friend, compare an entrance, roof or courtyard, and consider how a place can carry memory through changes in its buildings.
