Xi’an’s City Wall is a reminder that a city can keep an outline while life around it changes. The present wall was expanded in the Ming dynasty over earlier foundations, and later repairs helped shape what remains. Gates, towers and a moat belonged to a connected defensive system.
For a future walk, start with one section and leave time to pause. Stop where you can see a gate or a change in the brickwork. What would you notice first: the scale of the structure, or the individual pieces that hold it together? It is an easy question to carry into a conversation.
