Yellow Crane Tower

Layered roofs carry a famous Wuhan name into the present. Today’s tower is a reconstruction within a much older literary and architectural story.

Yellow Crane Tower has a long place in poetry and in Wuhan’s sense of itself. Its buildings have changed through repeated reconstruction; the present tower was completed in 1985 using Qing dynasty designs as a reference. The familiar name therefore connects an old cultural memory with a comparatively recent structure.

Follow the stacked roofs upward, then look at the spaces between them. Repetition gives the tower its rhythm, while each level changes the silhouette.
