Jiaohe stands on a raised, leaf-shaped plateau near Turpan, with river valleys along its sides. The remains preserve an ancient earthen city whose position helped define its shape. It is one of the sites included in UNESCO’s Chang’an–Tianshan Silk Roads corridor.
Follow the surviving edges of a wall or passage in the photographs. With a companion, consider what can still be understood from a place after its roofs and much of its everyday material life have disappeared.
