Fanjingshan stands out geologically as well as visually: its metamorphic rock differs from the surrounding karst country. Large changes in elevation support varied vegetation and important habitats, recognised through its World Heritage listing. The dramatic peaks are only one part of that story. Let your eye move from exposed rock to the surrounding forest, then compare the patterns and colours you notice. The quieter edges of a mountain can be as memorable as its summit.
