Dapeng Fortress began in 1394 as a coastal military stronghold. Its surviving gates, lanes and buildings carry traces of the Ming and Qing periods, giving this part of Shenzhen a history that reaches well beyond the modern skyline. A large gate can draw your attention first; the smaller streets invite a different pace.

Someday, take a short wander with someone who is happy to stop and look. Compare the scale of a gateway with a nearby doorway, or sketch the line of a roof. Let the walk make room for questions about both defence and everyday life. The smaller details can give you something to talk about long after the gate is behind you.
