Shenyang’s Imperial Palace records the Qing dynasty’s beginnings before its rulers established their capital in Beijing. UNESCO describes a complex that combines Manchu residential traditions with Han and Mongolian architectural influences. Its halls and courtyards offer a different scale and arrangement from the later imperial palace in Beijing.
Try noticing how a building sits within its courtyard before studying decoration. A friend may spot a roof or doorway that changes your first impression of the whole.
