Longmen Grottoes

Buddhist figures fill caves cut into riverside rock. Longmen moves between monumental sculpture and details small enough to reward a patient look.

The Longmen Grottoes preserve Buddhist carvings made over centuries, with major work during the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties. The sculptures range in scale and style, turning the rock faces into a record of changing artistic expression. Their setting belongs to Luoyang’s long history.

Start with the overall arrangement of figures, then choose a face, fold of clothing or gesture. A small detail can bring the work of distant craftspeople into sharper focus.
