Old Town of Lijiang

Waterways thread through an old trading town shaped by many cultures. Look for the meeting of a bridge, a doorway and a canal.

The waterways are a useful starting point for reading Lijiang. Canals connect its houses and lanes to a larger water system fed from the surrounding landscape. Timber buildings reveal Naxi traditions alongside influences from other communities brought together through trade. Instead of trying to photograph every street, pick one meeting of water and architecture. A bridge or carved doorway can open a conversation about how a town adapts to its setting.
