Potala Palace

White and red palace walls rise from Lhasa’s Red Mountain. Their stepped outlines make the hill part of the architecture.

The Potala’s White and Red Palaces rise together on Red Mountain in the Lhasa Valley. As a historic winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, the complex connects religious life with Tibet’s former administration. From a broad view, notice how the buildings follow the hill rather than sitting apart from it. Then choose one contrast: a dark window against a pale wall, or a straight roofline against the mountain. Small observations give the great outline a human scale.
