Mount Huangshan

Granite peaks and pines have inspired generations of artists. Clouds sometimes soften the mountain’s outlines, leaving room for imagination between the ridges.

Mount Huangshan’s granite peaks, unusual rocks and old pines helped shape an enduring image of Chinese mountain scenery. Poets and painters returned to these forms across generations, finding a landscape that could become both subject and inspiration. Clouds and mist add another changing layer.

In a photograph, follow the nearest ridge toward the distance. Which details feel solid, and which seem to disappear? A mountain picture can reward a surprisingly slow look.
