Hongcun Village
White walls and dark roofs gather around village water. Hongcun’s ponds and channels connect its architecture with the landscape of southern Anhui.

Hongcun lies in Yi County within Huangshan City, separate from the mountain scenic area. Its houses, lanes and water system preserve the character of a southern Anhui village. The central Moon Pond and a larger pond to the south show how water belongs within the settlement’s design.
Begin with a reflected roofline, then notice the building above it. From a public path, small changes of angle can make the village feel newly arranged.
