Tian Tan Buddha

A bronze Buddha sits above Ngong Ping on Lantau Island. The surrounding hills give the sculpture a very different setting from the harbour.

Completed in 1993, the Tian Tan Buddha is a seated bronze figure above Ngong Ping on Lantau Island. Its setting near Po Lin Monastery links the sculpture with a wider religious landscape. In a photograph, look at how the figure’s outline meets the sky and how the hills frame its base. A companion might first notice the face, the raised hand or the contrast between metal and greenery. Share those impressions before reaching for a single interpretation.
