Saint Sophia Cathedral

Red brick and a green dome make a distinctive Harbin silhouette. Look closer and the large shape breaks into arches and smaller roofs.

Saint Sophia’s red walls and green dome are among Harbin’s recognisable architectural features. The church’s history began in 1907, and its Byzantine-inspired form contrasts with the streets around it. Seen from the square, the building is both a broad silhouette and a collection of smaller arches, windows and roof shapes.

One person can describe the outline while another chooses a detail in the brickwork. Comparing the two views is a simple way to begin looking more slowly.
