Along the Li River landscape around Guilin, limestone hills form a changing sequence of towers and cones. UNESCO recognises the Guilin karst component for these contrasting formations within the wider South China Karst property. A photograph can flatten the hills into one silhouette; looking carefully restores their layers. Pick out a nearby slope, a farther ridge and a patch of open water. Compare how each of you would arrange those three elements in a sketch.
