Xiguan’s traditional houses offer a story about making room for everyday life. One distinctive feature is the tanglong door, a wooden barrier that forms part of a layered entrance. Together, these doors balance ventilation, daylight and protection, showing how a doorway can answer several needs at once.
For a someday walk, start with a detail visible from the street, and wonder how homes balance openness with privacy. You and a friend could compare a doorway here with one you remember from childhood. The conversation belongs to you; the homes and their thresholds belong to the people who use them.
