On Shamian, looking at a building can turn into looking at a whole street. The island’s historic architecture includes neoclassical, Baroque-inspired and Gothic-inspired forms, alongside features adapted to Guangzhou’s climate. It is a place to notice how a window, an arcade or a patch of greenery changes the space around it.
Imagine a walk with room for pauses. One of you might follow the rhythm of the facades while the other watches how branches frame them. Let one small observation lead to another, and stop whenever the conversation needs more time. The shared memory could simply be a street you learned to look at together.
