Dazu Rock Carvings at Baodingshan

Figures fill a cliff with religious stories and scenes of human life. Baodingshan is one part of the wider Dazu carvings.

At Baodingshan, sculpture unfolds along the rock rather than inside a single freestanding monument. Its groups of carvings date mainly from the late twelfth to mid-thirteenth centuries and belong to the larger Dazu World Heritage property. Religious teaching and details of everyday life meet in these compositions. Give one small group time before moving on: a gesture, face or arrangement of figures may help you and a companion begin asking different questions about the same scene.
