A PLACE, A STORY / Chengde
Chengde Mountain Resort
A summer retreat also served as a place of government. Lakes and wooded hills soften the scale of an imperial landscape.

Chengde’s Mountain Resort was built for Qing emperors between 1703 and 1792. Its grounds combine palace buildings with lakes, grassland and wooded slopes, making scenery part of the design. The court came here for government business as well as seasonal retreat.
Imagine comparing two views with a friend: one framed by a roof, another by trees. Which feels more carefully arranged? The question makes an enormous imperial garden approachable, one small scene at a time.
